필름의 물성(物性)을 유기물질과 상호 작용시켜 이들의 생화학적 반응을 관찰하고 그 과정을 개념화해 사진매체로 시각화했다.
사람들의 다양한 표정이나 동작을 촬영한 필름을 현상한 뒤 곰팡이 균이 발생할 수 있는 적절한 환경을 만들어준다. 그 필름 위에 균을 배양하고 수개월에 걸쳐 관찰하다 보면 곰팡이가 필름의 감광물질을 자기증식을 위한 에너지원으로 부패시켜 소모하는 과정을 보게 된다. 말하자면, 미생물이 필름의 화학물질을 먹고 있는 것이다. 이러한 긴 과정을 거치는 동안 곰팡이 균들은 인물사진 위에 자취를 남긴다.
반복적인 패턴이 만들어져 있기도 하고, 불규칙한 선, 점들이 나타나 있기도 하며, 감광물질을 화려한 색들로 분해해 놓기도 한다. 여기서 아주 적은 확률로 적절하게 손상된 인물 이미지를 얻을 수 있다. 그런 다음, 건조시키지 않고 필름을 이러한 물질변환과정 상태로 유지시킬 경우 필름 위에 이미지는 거의 해체돼 흩어져버리고 빈 공간만 남게 된다. 이처럼 물질의 생화학적 현상을 필름사진에 적용시켜 사진의 개념적 표현방식을 통해 생명을 포함한 물질의 비영구(非永久)적 속성을 시각적으로 표현하고자 했다.
The visual result of the symbiosis between film matter and organic matter is the conceptual origin of this body of work.
This project is about the superimposition of a moment in microbial growth upon a moment in the life of a person through the projection of one spatial-temporal reality onto another. This captures the evanescence of film photography, the transiency of life, and the continual entangled creative and destructive processes; a millisecond of an expression, an instance of an autonomous geometric evisceration of film, an exploitation of chemical materiality, a vestige composed of millions of pixels,and a complete obliteration into intangible atoms that dissipate into something else.
The process involves the cultivation of chemical consuming microbes on a visual environment created through portraits and a physical environment composed of developed film immersed in water. As the microbes consume the emulsion over the course of months, the silver halides destabilize, obfuscating the legibility of foreground, background, and scale. This creates an aesthetic of entangled creation and destruction that inevitably is ephemeral, and results in complete disintegration of the film so that it can only be delicately digitized before it is consumed.
