《Seeing and Being Seen_When
he comes》는 서자현 작가가 2016년 뉴욕
NARS Foundation의 레지던시 프로그램을 통해 시작한 연작의 연장선상에 있습니다. ‘보는
것과 보여지는 것’이라는 근본적인 질문을 던지며, 이 시리즈는
시간이 흐를수록 더 정제되고도 깊어진 형태로 발전해왔습니다. 2025년의 부제 “When he comes”는 혼란과 불안이 지속되는 시대 속에서, 우리가
무엇을 바라보며, 또 누군가에게 어떻게 보이고자 하는지에 대한 성찰의 지점을 더욱 구체화합니다.
이번 전시에서 작가는 눈에 보이지 않지만 분명히 존재하는 것들(신념, 사랑, 회복, 기다림)을 캔버스 위에서 빛, 격자, 흐름, 상징적 색채로 풀어냅니다.
금빛과 파랑, 노란색은 영광이나 희망을 떠올리게 하지만,
동시에 거칠고 울퉁불퉁한 표면과 결합하여 ‘완전하지 않은 현재’를 함께 보여줍니다. 이 전시는 예술가 개인의 신앙적 관점을 넘어서, 우리가 겪는 고통과 기다림, 그리고 그 속에서도 서로를 바라보며
더불어 살아가고자 하는 연대의 감정을 담고 있습니다. 작가는 “고통은
단지 견뎌야 하는 것이 아니라, 생명의 가치와 아름다움을 비로소 발견하게 되는 여정이다.” 《When he comes》는 이 시대를 살아가는 모두에게 보내는
작은 신호이자, 기다림 속에서도 사랑을 발견할 수 있다는 믿음의 시각적 언어입니다. 그리고 그 언어를 찾아내기 위한 시간과 고민, 묵상과 노동이 이
작품 안에 차곡차곡 쌓여 있습니다.
“Seeing and Being Seen_When
he comes” is an extension of the long-term series that Jahyun Seo began during
her 2016 residency at the NARS Foundation in New York. Rooted in the
fundamental question of "seeing and being seen," the series has
evolved over time into increasingly refined and profound visual expressions.
The 2025 subtheme, “When he comes”, sharpens this inquiry in a world marked by
chaos and uncertainty—asking what we are truly looking for, and how we wish to
be perceived by others.
In this exhibition, the artist
visualizes unseen yet deeply felt concepts (faith, love, restoration, and waiting)
through layered grids, flowing forms, and symbolic use of light and color.
Gold, blue, and yellow suggest glory and hope, but are layered with rough and
textured surfaces, revealing the fragmented, imperfect present we inhabit.
This exhibition moves beyond the
artist’s personal spiritual perspective to embrace a broader human experience
of pain and anticipation, and the sense of solidarity found in looking toward
one another. As Seo states, “Suffering is not merely something to endure—it is
the journey through which we begin to perceive the true value and beauty of
life.” When he comes is both a quiet signal and a visual language of belief—one
that suggests love can still be found even in the midst of waiting. Each work
in the series is the result of accumulated time, reflection, prayer, and labor,
layered into forms that invite viewers to witness and contemplate alongside the
artist.
